What Is Unusual Activity Monitoring?
WebWork’s unusual employee activity tracking feature identifies patterns that fall outside of each employee’s normal activity metrics. Whether it’s unusually consistent activity, abnormally low activity, or suspicious keyboard behavior, the system automatically detects and logs it. It’s an essential part of employee activity and employee behavior analytics, enabling informed decision-making and proactive performance management.
Key Patterns Detected by Unusual Activity Monitoring
By analyzing input behavior and usage patterns in real time, WebWork helps you track unusual employee activity and spot signs of automation, disengagement, or burnout before they impact performance.
High Activity
When an employee’s activity level remains above 95% for over 45 minutes, it’s flagged as unusually high activity. While focused work can lead to short bursts of high output, prolonged activity at this level is uncommon and may indicate artificial input or scripted behavior. With this insight, you can ensure that productivity remains authentic and not artificially inflated.
Low Mouse Input
In contrast, low mouse input highlights members who are actively using the keyboard but show little to no mouse interaction over an hour. This is often seen when: Mouse activity is 2 or fewer per minute, while Keyboard activity averages 10 or more per minute While certain roles like writing or coding can be keyboard-heavy, total lack of mouse input may still signal unusual employee activity.
Consistent Activity
WebWork detects unusually consistent activity when an employee’s input rate fluctuates by less than 4% over an hour, or not at all for 30 minutes or more. While steady effort is valuable, extremely uniform activity can point to automated tools or artificial engagement. This helps you identify employee suspicious activity that could otherwise go unnoticed.
No Breaks
WebWork flags members who work four or more hours straight without a single minute below 10% activity. While some employees push themselves during peak focus, extended sessions without breaks may indicate: Risk of burnout Forgotten or unattended tracking Unsustainable work habits This insight helps managers encourage healthier work routines and better time management.
Low Keyboard Input
This pattern flags employees who show consistently high mouse usage, but almost no keyboard input for extended periods, specifically, 60 minutes or more with: Keyboard activity at or below 2 per minute Mouse activity at or above 10 per minute This may suggest unbalanced behavior or non-standard workflows that need a closer look.
Total Instances & Total Time
For every member, WebWork tracks: Total instances: The number of flagged unusual activity events Total time: The combined duration of all flagged patterns These aggregated insights provide a clear, data-backed view of individual and team behavior, making it easier to detect unusual work patterns, address issues early, and improve team efficiency.
How to detect employee unusual activity?
WebWork detects unusual activity monitoring all on its own, without your intervention.

Enable Unusual Activity Monitoring
First, ensure your workspace members have installed the Desktop Time Tracker. Once they start tracking time with it, enable Unusual Activity from Monitoring in the sidebar.
Track Time and Monitor Activity
WebWork tracks time and employee activity as usual. Make sure the Activity Tracking feature is enabled as well.
Check Unusual Activity Results
Go to Monitoring > Unusual Activity and see the list of members who have shown unusual activity.
Visual Insights with Unusual Activity Charts
Understanding unusual employee activity is even more powerful when visualized. That’s why WebWork presents unusual activity data in interactive charts, so you can see exactly who showed unusual activity, how often, and for how long. Choose between bar or pie chart views, and filter data by member, team, title, or member type. Each chart slice or bar represents the total time spent in unusual activity, making it easy to detect suspicious patterns and compare across individuals or teams at a glance.

How does WebWork detect unusual employee activity?
WebWork uses real-time keyboard and mouse analytics to compare current behavior against a user’s typical patterns. It flags deviations such as unusually high or consistent activity, low input levels, or sessions without breaks.
Can WebWork detect artificial or scripted input?
Yes. WebWork’s automatic unusual activity detection flags suspicious patterns like consistent input with no variation, unbalanced keyboard/mouse usage, or continuous high activity—helping identify artificial or automated behavior.
Why is it important to track unusual employee activity?
Tracking unusual activity helps detect issues like disengagement, burnout, automation misuse, or time manipulation. It improves accountability and enables proactive team management without micromanaging.
Can I view unusual activity data in charts or reports?
Yes. WebWork presents unusual activity in bar and pie charts that visualize total time per member or team. You can filter by member type, date, or behavior type and export reports for deeper analysis.
Is unusual activity monitoring included in all WebWork plans?
Unusual Activity Monitoring is available in the Premium plan. See what each pricing plan offers here.
What’s the difference between normal and unusual activity in WebWork?
Normal activity reflects regular keyboard/mouse input with natural fluctuations. Unusual activity refers to extreme consistency, spikes, inactivity, or imbalances that don’t align with typical work behavior.
How can unusual activity data help improve productivity?
By identifying abnormal employee behavior, you can detect disengagement, overwork, or inefficiencies early. This allows you to intervene with support, reassign tasks, or optimize workflows.
