Employee monitoring software shows you where work time goes: which apps and websites are open, how active each person is, and when the workday starts and ends. The six tools on this list all do that. Where they differ is what they’re built for, from payroll-ready time tracking to blocking data before it leaves a laptop.

We checked every price and plan below against each vendor’s own pricing page in September 2026. Several of these tools changed their plans this year, so older reviews may quote tiers that no longer exist.

Prices are as listed on each tool’s pricing page in September, 2026.

1. WebWork: best for monitoring, attendance, and payroll in one tool

WebWork tracks time and shows what happens during it: which apps and websites your team uses and for how long, activity levels, screenshots, and attendance. Every feature in the list below is included from the $3.99 Pro plan unless we say otherwise.

We built WebWork for teams that want visibility without paying for a separate tool for each job. Attendance reports, timesheets, and payroll all use the same tracked hours.

Key features:

  1. Screenshots on every plan, up to 3 every 10 minutes on Pro and up to 10 on Plus and Premium. You can blur them or turn them off for specific projects.
  2. App and website monitoring with time spent per tool. Plus adds full URLs and window titles.
  3. Activity levels based on mouse clicks, scrolls, and keystrokes, shown as high, medium, or low.
  4. Real-time monitoring of who is working, on which project and task, and in which app.
  5. A silent tracker for company-owned devices that runs without employee interaction.
  6. Employee attendance monitoring that detects late starts, early finishes, and absences.

On Plus and Premium, burnout risk flags long hours and missed breaks. Premium adds unusual activity detection for patterns like auto-clickers.

Pricing: Pro $3.99, Plus $6.39, and Premium $7.19 per user/month, billed annually. Payroll, video screenshots, and shift scheduling start on Plus.

Worth knowing: WebWork reports which apps and websites appear in tracked time and for how long. It doesn’t prevent data from leaving a device, and it only sees devices where the tracker is installed. Automatic productive and non-productive labeling is on Premium; on Pro and Plus, you set the categories yourself.

If you want to see these reports with your own team’s data, you can try WebWork free for 14 days. No credit card needed.

2. Teramind: best for insider threat detection and data loss prevention

Teramind is a security tool first. It records screens, scores risky behavior, and can block actions that break your rules. It has dedicated solutions for financial services, healthcare, and government.

Key features:

  1. Screen recording, live view, and activity blocking on every plan.
  2. Keystroke logging plus email, file transfer, and printing monitoring from the UAM plan.
  3. Content-based DLP rules, sensitive content redaction, and automatic DLP blocking on the DLP plan.
  4. AI conversation recording and AI data exfiltration controls from the UAM plan.
  5. OCR of screen content on Enterprise.

Pricing: Starter $15, UAM $30, and DLP $35 per seat/month, billed monthly. Annual billing gives you one month free. Enterprise is custom.

Worth knowing: Every plan has a 5-seat minimum. Keystroke logging and screen recording capture far more than time tracking does, so tell your team exactly what’s recorded before you roll it out.

3. ActivTrak: best for workforce analytics and capacity planning

ActivTrak focuses on analytics for leadership: utilization, workload balance, and productivity trends across teams. It’s the only tool on this list with a free plan, limited to 3 people and 30 days of data.

Key features:

  1. Work Activity Tracking ($10): automatic time tracking, attendance and schedule adherence, app and website usage, and compliance alarms.
  2. Workforce Management ($15): utilization, productivity goals, and work location policy checks.
  3. Productivity Optimization ($17): capacity and headcount planning, workload balance, and engagement and burnout signals.
  4. Mouse-jiggler detection and USB and file transfer alerts on the $10 and $15 plans.
  5. An AI Insights add-on (+$4) that measures AI tool usage and adoption.

Pricing: Free for up to 3 people. Paid plans are $10, $15, and $17 per worker/month, billed annually only. Older reviews still use the previous plan names (Essentials, Essentials Plus, Professional).

Worth knowing: Screenshots and live screen view come through the paid Screen Details add-on, which is available on the $10 and $15 plans. Accounts with more than 50 licenses also need a paid support plan.

4. Insightful: best for analytics at scale, including on-premise

Insightful (formerly Workpuls) tracks apps, websites, and active and idle time, then turns that data into capacity and productivity reports. Like Teramind, it can run on your own servers.

Key features:

  1. Real-time overview, app and website usage, screenshots, and capacity analysis on the $8 Workforce Analytics plan.
  2. Workflow Optimization ($12, currently in beta) for mapping and measuring how processes run.
  3. Add-ons for screen recording ($4), on-demand screenshots ($4), and a Workspace Security plan ($4) with insider threat detection.
  4. 24 months of data retention on every plan.

Pricing: Workforce Analytics $8, Workflow Optimization $12, and the Combo plan $16 per seat/month, billed annually. Enterprise is custom, and month-to-month billing is available on select plans.

Worth knowing: Screen recording and security features are paid add-ons. On-premise deployment needs at least 250 licenses, and payroll and invoicing are listed as coming soon.

5. Hubstaff: best for remote and field teams that need GPS

Hubstaff pairs time tracking with activity levels, screenshots, and app and URL tracking. Its GPS job sites and geofences are built for teams that work on location.

Key features:

  1. Screenshots capped at 500 per user/month on Starter and 1,500 on Grow, with the same caps on app and URL tracking. Team and Enterprise have unlimited screenshots.
  2. Payroll automation, scheduling, attendance, and Insights workforce analytics on the Team plan.
  3. GPS tracking and geofenced job sites through the Locations add-on: $3.33 per user/month on Team and included on Enterprise. Starter and Grow don’t offer it.
  4. Background tracking on company-owned devices through the Silent App add-on (from $2.50) or on Enterprise.
  5. SSO, SCIM provisioning, and HIPAA support on Enterprise.

Pricing: Starter $4.99, Grow $7.50, Team $10, and Enterprise $25 per user/month, billed annually. Monthly billing is $7, $9, and $12 for the first three plans.

Worth knowing: Hubstaff has no free plan. Silent tracking is an add-on below Enterprise, GPS runs through the paid Locations add-on, and workforce analytics is an add-on below Team.

6. Time Doctor: best for productivity ratings and AI activity reports

Time Doctor tracks time automatically or manually and rates app and website use by productivity. Its Premium plan adds AI reports that flag mouse jigglers and irregular keyboard activity.

Key features:

  1. Screenshots, a timeline report, and projects and tasks on Basic.
  2. Web and app usage reporting, productivity ratings, attendance, break tracking, and payroll on Standard.
  3. Video screen recording and the Unusual Activity AI report on Premium.
  4. Office vs. remote reporting and Benchmarks AI on Premium, or as $2 and $3 add-ons on lower plans.
  5. Client login access on Premium.

Pricing: Basic $6.67, Standard $11.67, and Premium $16.70 per user/month, billed annually ($8, $14, and $20 month-to-month). Enterprise is custom.

Worth knowing: App and website usage reporting starts on Standard, so Basic shows screenshots and hours but not which tools people use. Basic also keeps only 3 months of history.

How to choose employee monitoring software

Start with the problem you need to solve, then check what each tool costs at your team size.

  1. Decide what you need the data for. For time, attendance, and payroll, look at WebWork, Hubstaff, and Time Doctor. For leadership analytics and capacity planning, look at ActivTrak and Insightful. For blocking risky actions and preventing data loss, look at Teramind.
  2. Price the plan with the features you’ll use. Seat minimums, add-ons, and annual-only billing change the real number. For example, a 3-person team on Teramind Starter pays for 5 seats, which comes to $75 a month.
  3. Tell your team what you track. Choose visible or silent tracking based on who owns the device, and check the notice and consent rules where your employees work. Our guide on whether employee monitoring is legal for remote teams covers the basics.

If your main question is which AI tools your team uses at work, our guide to detecting shadow AI in your team shows what time-based usage data can and can’t tell you.
