What Is a Night Shift?

A night shift is a work shift that takes place at night, outside of typical working schedules like the 9-5. It is used in industries where organizations often need to operate around the clock, like manufacturing and healthcare. Besides the shift itself, the term “night shift” may also refer to the employees working at night.

What is considered a night shift?

A night shift is generally a shift where most of the hours fall between midnight and 6 AM. The most common pattern runs from about 11 PM to 7 AM, though many businesses schedule theirs from 10 PM to 6 AM or from midnight to 8 AM. The exact definition is set by company policy or a collective agreement — what counts is which hours your business treats as night work. You can implement night shifts of varying lengths depending on which shift pattern you choose to use.

Night shift vs overnight, graveyard, and third shift

The terms overlap, but they aren’t perfectly interchangeable:

  • Overnight shift — any shift that spans midnight, for example 9 PM to 5 AM.
  • Graveyard shift — an informal name for the night shift, usually the stretch from midnight to the early morning.
  • Third shift — the same hours in manufacturing terms: the first shift covers the morning, the second the afternoon and evening, and the third the night.
  • Swing shift — the second, evening shift. It is often confused with the night shift, but it typically ends around midnight rather than starting there.

Whatever your company calls it, the defining feature is the same: most of the working hours happen while the rest of the business is off the clock.

What is night shift differential pay?

Night shift differential is the premium many employers add to base pay for night hours — typically an extra 5–15% of the hourly rate, or a flat amount per hour. In the United States it isn’t required by federal law (federal employees are a separate case), so private employers set it through policy or collective agreements, while some countries’ labor codes do mandate a night-work premium. If you pay a differential, accurate payroll tracking of exactly which hours fell at night keeps it fair and auditable.

What are the disadvantages of a night shift?

The main drawback of night shifts is their adverse effects on employee health. Working at night can cause a variety of issues related to your staff’s sleep and mental health.

Another negative effect of night shifts is an unhealthy work-life balance. This results from the limited amount of time night shift workers will have to fulfill their personal responsibilities throughout the day. Consequently, shift scheduling is commonly used to lessen these effects on employees and provide them with extra time to recover.
